Description

Tulsi is an erect, much branched sub-shrub 30-60 cm tall, with simple opposite green or purple leaves that are strongly scented and hairy stems. Leaves have petiole and are ovate, up to 5 cm long, usually somewhat toothed. Flowers are purplish in elongate racemes in close whorls.

Tulsi leaves treat skin problems like acne, blackheads, and premature ageing. This is useful to treat insect bites. Tulsi is also used to treat heart disease and fever. Tulsi also used treats respiratory problems.

In traditional systems of medicine, different parts (leaves, stem, flower, root, seeds, and even whole plant) of Ocimum sanctum Linn (known as Tulsi in Hindi), a small herb seen throughout India, people recommend for the treatment of bronchitis, bronchial asthma, malaria, diarrhoea, dysentery, skin diseases, etc.
